Shahriar Nafees

Shahriar Nafees is one of the most promising cricketers of Bangladesh. He made his ODI debut 21 June, 2005 against England and Test debut 12 September, 2005 against Sri Lanka. He started his career in a time when there is no promising opener in the team and when Ashraful, Aftab and Mashrafe led the team and gifted some victories to the country. Shahriar Nafees is naturally a stroke-making player. With his debut, Bangladesh got an opening player to rely on, when Javed Omar (former opener) could not show his performance.

Shahriar Nafees became a very reliable one both in Test and ODI after his debut in a short time. He is the only Bangladeshi batsman who cross the line of 1000 thousand run (1033 run) in a calendar year (2006). No Bangladeshi batsman could do it ever. He his mostly remembered for his 138 run against Australia in 2006 at the first innings of Fatullah Test. He scored 67 runs from 56 balls of Shane Warne with ten fours. It was, that time, became the advertisement of Bangladeshi cricket. In his ODI career he smashed four centuries and end with all not-out. In the time of 2007 world cup participation, when he was the vice-captain of Bangladesh team, his four centuries was the record for any Bangladeshi player. But that is the last good thing to tell about him.

From the 2007 world cup he lost his form unfortunately. From then he seem like exhausted. Though sometimes he returned to the team and made some runs but it seems like that he was never a good batsman. It seems he lost his form for good. Going to ICL in 2008 was his biggest controversy in his career. He was given ten years ban from the Bangladesh Cricket Board for going to ICL. But later it was lifted. After that several times he got chances to return in the team, but he never succeed to establish his place in the team. In the second season of BPL he joined Khulna Royal Bengals as a captain. He scored a century in the BPL and became the first Bangladeshi centurion in BPL.

In a conversation, he said he is working to keep his fitness. He is very eager to perform for the team if he gets chance. He also complained that after 2007 he did not get the opportunity to play for a long time. That’s why he was always in tension to throw away from the team.
