There are a few legendary entrepreneurs born in Bangladesh. Samson H. Chowdhury is one of them. He was a person, who had presented Bangladesh to the world from a different angle by his company Square Ltd. His company Square Ltd is the first company which exports medicine more than fifty countries in all over the world.

Early Life & Education

Samson H. Chowdhury was born at Arukandi in Gopalganj on 25th September, 1925. His father, Eakub Hossain Chowdhury was a medical officer. His father was posted to Chandpur Mission Hospital, so he started his education from a mission school in Chandpur. After some years, his father was posted to Ataikula, Pabna and he was admitted into Ataikula School. In 1993, he was moved to Mymensingh and admitted into Victoria Mission School in class four. Here he lived two years and in 1935 he moved to West Bengal and admitted into Siksha Shongho High School in Bishnupur, Kolkata.

But, he left the institute in 1942 because of World War II and returned to his village in Pabna. Then he passed his Matriculation exam from Ataikula High School, Pabna.


Samson H. Chowdhury left his home at 17 years for keen to work. At first he got a job in the Royal Indian Navy where he served three years. He came back to Pabna in 1947 and got a job of Postal Depertment in Pabna. But he didn’t like this clerical work. So he left the job and started passing his time in his father’s “Hossain pharmacy”. Then in 1956, he borrowed 5,000 taka from his father and opened a company named “Esons” which only provided syrups in that region.

Square Group

In 1958, Samson H. Chowdhury and three of his friends made Square which was the beginning of a great company. They named it ‘Square’ because they were four contributors and its four lines are the symbol of accuracy and perfection. This company couldn’t make any profit in first three years. But after three years, it didn’t look back any more. They also made several businesses under Square Group. These are pharmaceuticals, hospital, textiles, toiletries, consumer goods, herbal medicine, agro vet products, information technology, television channel and advertising agency.

In a statistics of 2011, more than 36,000 people worked under Square Group and make average  annual turnover of 800 million US$.

Personal Life

Samson H. Chowdhury married Anita Biswas in 1947. He had three sons and a daughter. Photography was his hobby.
