Firoza Begum is the most popular Bangladeshi Nazrul Sangeet singers who popularized this genre of music not just in Bangladesh, but also in the whole south-east Asia. Millions of Nazrul Sangeet lovers adhere her name with great honor. True to say, it’s quite impossible to talk about the evolution of Nazrul Sangeet without mentioning this legendary singer.
This passionate Nazrul Sangeet singer started her career recording an Islamic song (Morur Buke Jibondhara Ke Bohalo) by a gramophone company in 1942 when she was only 12 years old. She professionally started singing Nazrul Sangeet in 1960s. It was a time when the popularity of this genre of music began to decline due to flawed rendition by singers. It was Feroza Begum whose passionate singing with unique style restored the popularity of Nazrul Geeti in the middle of last century in this sub-continent. In addition to Nazrul Sangeet, this multi-talented singer is also proficient is singing other music genres like Ghazal, Thumri, Dhadra and Adhunik songs.
She married renowned singer, lyricist and composer Kamal Das Gupta in 1956 who died in 20th July, 1974. Her sons, Hamin Ahmed and Shafin Ahmed, are also very much popular in Bangladesh (founder members of pioneer rock band Miles) and another son Tahsin Ahmed now lives in America.
